This collection, including 163 images in both black and white and colour, belonged to George Markides, former mayor of Nicosia from 6 April 1926 – 31 March 1929. The oldest photographs are from the turn of the 20th century with the most recent ones dating to the second half of the 20th century. Amongst these images are many professional portraits, holiday photographs, family photographs relating to both the Markides family as well as that of Georges' wife Galateia Theodorou Markides (Chrysostomides), and official photographs from public demonstrations and official dinners and events with prominent public figures like Makarios II and III.
The images that comprise the online collection were reproduced from the original prints. The titles were taken from inscriptions on the photos when available. Where no inscriptions were available the titles were generated by the cataloguer describing the depicted subject.
CVAR holds digital reproductions of the originals and shares copyrights with the owner.
